Traditional African Black Soap (ABS), or Black Soap, is made with the ash of burned botanicals, typically cocoa pods, banana leaves, shea tree bark and/or plantain skin, leaves or bark. The burned botanicals are the "lye". You cannot make true, unadulterated African Black Soap if you have no access to cocoa pods, banana leaves, shea tree bark, etc., and traditionally the ash from the botanicals is created from burning over an open fire.

ASC purchases African Black Soap Paste from 3CAYG, an organization dedicated to empowering and supporting women and small businesses in Africa. A small family business in Ghana handcrafts all of 3CAYG’s ABS using traditional methods.

By crafting Auburn African Black Soap with authentic, traditionally crafted ABS, our soap has a plethora of the properties and benefits that make ABS such a wonderful skin care soap. Some of the proven properties of ABS are that it can aid in controlling skin conditions from acne to mild rashes; it has natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties; and it is a wonderful deep cleanser yet exceedingly gentle and benefits all skin types. Scented Earthy, a scent which leads with patchouli and pepper notes.

Oils: Olive, Canola, Coconut, Karanja, Kokum Butter, Mango Butter, Avocado, Castor.
Additions: African Black Soap Paste, Cruelty-Free Peace Silk, Sea Salt, Sugar, Citric Acid.

Each bar of soap from Ascent Soap Co. is handmade, hand cut, and hand-packaged. Every ingredient is safe, natural, and ethically sourced. We use skin-safe phthalate-free scents for fragrance, natural colorants from plants, botanicals, and clays, and pure, skin-loving oils (no pre-made bases, fillers, detergents, or preservatives). Many of our additives are sourced botanicals from our organic backyard gardens, harvested by hand and infused, dried and/or powdered.

Tip: To extend the life of your soap, keep dry between uses. Use a draining soap dish and keep away from direct streams of water.
